Hundreds of UMMC graduates earned degrees in the health sciences Friday during a ceremony at Mississippi Coliseum. The number of degrees conferred this year showed an increase of 97 from 2021, reflecting the Medical Center’s efforts to meet the state’s health care needs.

When three teens in fall 2021 began a nine-month program at UMMC that would give them both life and job skills, the goal was to obtain a full-time job and self-sufficiency. After Rachel Sims’ maternal-fetal medicine specialist spotted a possible heart defect in her unborn baby, things moved fast for her and little Bishop. A multidisciplinary team from the Children’s of Mississippi Heart Center stepped in to begin caring for him, and the Medical Center’s maternal-fetal medicine team prepared Rachel for her third child’s birth. After two surgeries, Bishop is thriving.

It’s the first time the SON’s Alumni Board has named both an Alumna and an Alumnus of the Year, but the choice was clear: They’re both winners.
